MODELING AND SIMULATION ENGINEER

INDUSTRY HOT TOPICS

Though still an emerging industry in Brevard County, companies that utilize or support the Modeling and Simulation trades are well-established in the local area, especially in the designated “High Tech Corridor”.

The industry development in Central Florida was initially driven by the requirements of DOD for aircraft, ship, and vehicle simulators and the ability of the local academic and business communities to meet and exceed these requirements.

The health of the current industry is demonstrated by the more than 2,500 private and public organizations employing more than 36,000 people within the High Tech Corridor.  The industry is projected to demonstrate continued growth in the coming years.

The National Center for Simulation (NCS), a member-supported non-profit organization promoting the Modeling and Simulation industry, was established in Orlando in 1993.  This organization is an outstanding resource for those considering a career in the industry.

CAREER DESCRIPTION

As with many evolving industries, the education requirements for a Modeling and Simulation career may encompass a relatively wide range of academic disciplines.

Participation in the Modeling and Simulation graduate education program requires an undergraduate degree in engineering, computer science, psychology, the biological sciences, or mathematics.

The educational program includes tracks that apply to specific industry requirements including:
  • Quantitative Aspects of Simulation

  • Simulation Infrastructure

  • Simulation Management

  • Computer Visualization in M&S

  • Simulation Modeling and Analysis

  • Interactive Simulation/Intelligent Systems

  • Human Systems in M&S
Additionally, a certificate program offered by the University of Central Florida is tailored toward those with a background in instructional design, graphic arts, or engineering.

This program of study, with an emphasis on design for simulation and games, supports careers in simulation-based training.  This industry has a strong growth potential as fields as diverse as manufacturing and medical are utilizing this method of training.

The Modeling and Simulation industry may support clients as diverse as Aviation and Aerospace, Homeland Security, and Information Technology.
